Union Pacific Enhances Connectivity Between Mexico and Southeastern US

The new rail service will better connect Mexico’s industrial markets with destinations in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

Union Pacific has introduced an innovative rail service to enhance the connectivity between Mexico’s thriving industrial markets and key destinations in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. The railway company officially launched this domestic intermodal service on October 2nd, responding to the growing demand for transportation services linking Mexico’s industrial hubs with these southeastern U.S. states.

This newly inaugurated service expands its reach across nine strategic destinations spanning the three states. Union Pacific is committed to ensuring efficient transit times, with shipments from Mexico to these destination markets taking anywhere from eight to 14 days.

To make this ambitious project a reality, Union Pacific has teamed up with a consortium of partners, including Ferromex, Norfolk Southern Railway, CSX, and Florida East Coast Railway.

Under this collaborative effort, the Mexican railway operator Ferromex will handle the initial transportation leg, taking cargo to Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, Union Pacific will seamlessly take over the transportation, ensuring a smooth journey to Memphis, Tennessee. Subsequently, the cargo will be distributed to various markets within Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Union Pacific’s new service builds upon a recent agreement between Norfolk Southern and Florida East Coast Railway. This agreement grants Norfolk Southern access to Florida East Coast Railway’s intermodal terminals located in Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale, complementing its existing network served by the terminals in Titusville and Miami.

Access to these additional terminals is expected to significantly reduce drayage, which not only translates to lower highway emissions but also results in cost savings. Luis Hernández, Vice President of Intermodal at Florida East Coast Railway, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Florida East Coast Railway is ready to expand its reach to additional markets on the East and West Coasts of the United States, further strengthening our robust relationship with Norfolk Southern.”
